Historically, portraiture has been an exploration of a person’s hierarchical status within the world. I use portraiture to begin analysing the relationships between the people in my life and holistically, how they relate to the larger context of my surroundings. Both painting and relationship require a sense of wonder; in how they are constructed, what gives them their personality, their character, and how they are able to be examined again and again and yet reveal new intimate characteristics.
The painter, the sitter, the painting, the viewer - become one. The complexities of this relationship offering both frustration and joy in its very act.
